Alternatives to Google Trends: 9 Tools Depending on What You Actually Need

A practical list of alternatives to Google Trends — volume, competitors, breakout topics, and trends on keywords your site already ranks for. None of them is a clone of Trends; each replaces a different job.

There is no single alternative to Google Trends

People search alternatives to Google Trends when Trends will not give them a number they can put in a spreadsheet: monthly volume, a competitor’s keywords, or a list they did not have to type. Google Trends is still the best free pulse on relative public interest, seasonality and regions. An alternative is only useful if you name the job you wanted Trends to do. Below are nine options grouped by that job — not a ranked “Trends killer” list.

1–3. Volume, ads, and SEO estimates

Google Keyword Planner is the closest official substitute for “how big is this term?” It shows ad-focused volume ranges (and tighter figures if you spend). It is not interest-over-time and it under-weights queries nobody bids on.

Semrush (Keyword Magic, Topic Research, Trends) estimates monthly volume, difficulty and competitor overlap. Use it when the question is share of a SERP, not public curiosity. The volume figure will disagree with Trends’ 0–100 index; that is expected.

Ahrefs Keywords Explorer is the same class as Semrush: panel estimates, parent topics, ranking difficulty. Strong for a market you do not own yet. Neither Semrush nor Ahrefs starts from the queries Search Console already recorded for your URLs unless you import them.

4–6. Breakouts, discovery, and “what is exploding”

Exploding Topics is a curated feed of rising themes. Useful for editorial calendars and publishers. It is not a replacement for a domain’s query report, and it is paid.

Glimpse (and similar “Trends plus”) layers extra filtering and exports on interest data. Worth it if your job is spotting consumer fads all day. Overkill if you manage one site.

AnswerThePublic / AlsoAsked map questions and prepositions around a seed. They are alternatives to Trends’ related queries, not to the interest chart. Good for H2 ideas; noisy if you never check whether you already rank for the phrase.

7–9. Your own search data, and everywhere else people look

Google Search Console (and Bing Webmaster Tools) are the underrated alternatives to Google Trends for SEO: they show queries that already triggered your pages. A 28-day export is more actionable than a Trends screenshot of a seed you guessed. Trends still helps for seasonality on those terms — you should not have to paste them one by one.

Similarweb (and other traffic estimators) approximates category and referral interest. Different metric again.

Pinterest Trends, YouTube, TikTok Creative Center are the right alternatives when the demand is visual or video, not web search. Using web Trends to plan a TikTok series is the usual mismatch.

Alternative Replaces this Trends job
Keyword Planner Absolute volume / ads
Semrush / Ahrefs SEO estimates + competitors
Exploding Topics / Glimpse Curated breakouts
AnswerThePublic / AlsoAsked Related questions
Search Console + Bing Queries you already appear for
Pinterest / YouTube / TikTok Non-web demand

The SEO-shaped alternative: Trends on keywords you already rank for

Most “alternatives to Google Trends” lists stop at paid discovery tools. The gap in daily SEO is operational: take every query on your pages and in Google/Bing search stats, fetch Trends for that set, and recommend related terms next to URLs that can target them. Seomatia runs that pass. You still open raw Trends to explore a brand-new niche with no Search Console history. You still open Semrush to spy on a domain you do not own. You use Seomatia when the site already has queries and Trends-by-hand is the bottleneck.

How to choose without buying five subscriptions

Need seasonality or a region pulse → stay in Google Trends. Need bids → Keyword Planner. Need competitor keywords → Semrush or Ahrefs. Need a breakout story → Exploding Topics. Need to act on your ranking queries → Search Console, Bing, and Trends attached to that list at www.seomatia.com. An alternative that answers the wrong job is not an upgrade.
